(ContentDesk) November 26 2003--Clothes, games and electronics will probably still rule this year as popular Christmas gifts, but it's a sign of the times that safety products are gaining in popularity. Practical, yet still thoughtful and fun (in many cases) at the same time, safety kits can provide piece of mind as well as a present."People are much more safety aware with everything going on in the world," says Gary Maher, president of Safety Think Inc, a safety products retailer and distributor. "Our philosophy seems to be catching on which is simply that by thinking about safety now we can all relax and enjoy life. Besides there really are some safety products out there that make great gifts."Maher points out the NightstarII Battery-less flashlight as a popular item this year. "You shake it to generate power," said Maher.
"It's a great home safety tool and neat gadget at the same time" Other safety gift items recommended include fire extinguishers, emergency escape ladders, first aid and car safety kits, smoke/CO detectors, Christmas Tree Fire Gard, hazard radios and more. Maher even recommends a team sports first aid kit for that coach or weekend softball player on your list. If folks are looking for more gadgety items, they can go for TurboFlare, auto flare replacements. These are L.E.D. discs that can be placed on the ground around disabled cars to provide protection from oncoming traffic.
Police departments across the country have been using them in place of regular flares, and now they are available to the general public. Hazard radios are also quickly becoming a home safety essential and are even recommended by the Congressional Committee on Science."Really, you can never go wrong with safety items," says Maher. "They send the message you care and they can always be of use to the recipient."All the products mentioned are available via Safety Think by calling 1-866-723-3894 or by visiting the company's website at www.safetythink.com..

Shopping for a swimming pool
When the summer rolls around and the air heats up, we all dream of having pools in our own backyard. However, before shopping for pools, it is important to be aware of safety issues. Make sure you are willing to take on the responsibility before you buy.
Do you have a lot of kids in your neighborhood? Pools are magnets for children! Be aware that if the pool is on your property, you may be liable for any accident that may occur. For safety reasons, the American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend installing pools until your children are at least 5 years old. While they are certainly a lot of fun, pools can also be hazardous if the owners don't take proper precautions.
Fences should be placed around pools to prevent accidental falls as well as uninvited guests.
The fences should be at least 4 feet high and gated. Ideally, there should be latches and locks for when the pools are not in use. Ladders from above-ground pools should be removed when...

The Journey Home, Sydney Final Journal 4
(ContentDesk) September 21, 2005 -- This is it for the journals, so thanks for hanging in there. We leave tomorrow, Tuesday here, to start our journey home. Much to Dave's annoyance, I insist on stopping over for one night in LA, so we won't get back until Wednesday, U.S. time. By the way, stopping is the best in order to stand upright for 24 hours before the last leg.Our brother, Eddie Oppenheimer, from Mobile, blew into town right on schedule, on the 13th.
Considering that he came in from Hong Kong, he was in great shape. Before napping, he wanted to go to Balmoral beach and run! We never knew that Eddie had taken up running and we were very impressed. He looks great, quite amazing, actually. His room was at the bottom of the Japanese steps which had me worried for weeks. But, he learned to navigate them post haste, even schlepping down one suitcase (the rest were left on level one)! Through circumstance, we had quite a social whirl while Ed was here.
More on this later...

Fighting Fires at Work
Copyright 2006 Marshall House
Out in the forest or in our neighborhood, we recognize a firefighter rather easily: a heavily-clad person, holding a fire hose, walking up or down a ladder, or performing some other tasks that reduce or end a conflagration.
Managers, consultants, and others are often expected to be "fire fighters." Here we do not wear hip boots ? although, come to think of it, this is a rather nifty idea. The water we apply to the fire is taken from our pool of resources and skills. We use ladders to reach our goals and comprehend the hierarchy. Fire fighting in organizations usually means solving crisis problems or calming interpersonal flare ups.
As a customer, I recently had a series of problems (fires) while working with a plant manager in a small company. I tried all the strategies I know as a consultant and manager and conflict mediator.
I even resorted to complaining about him to his secretary ? I shamelessly admit that...

Annuity Buyers Find Timing is Right on Fixed Annuities Treasury Bond Rate Reaches Six Month High
Medford, OR (ContentDesk) November 3, 2005 -- For the first time since March 2005, the 10 year Treasury bond rate is over 4.5%, and as a leading indicator for fixed annuity rates, is pointing investors back to this fundamental, principal protected investment vehicle. The wide variety of guaranteed, rate-protected annuities that are now available to investors, free of charges and fees, let individuals take charge of their retirement funds, says Ken Nuss, CEO of AnnuityAdvantage.com the Internets best known annuity research and sales site.
According to Nuss, Fixed annuities are an ideal way to keep retirement funds growing and working, while leaving the high fees, and market uncertainty behind.
One way former stock market investors are protecting their retirement funds is to create a modified annuity ladder, with guaranteed principal, increased liquidity, and interest-rate protection. A modified annuity ladder works like this:
Investors buy a ten year...
